We use the Apartheid Studies approach (ASa) to model selected aspects of day to day social life in our modern times in terms of pheromone trails. We call this the pheromone trail model (PTM). Ant scouts leave pheromone trails so that they can find their way back home, but also so that the colony can follow in search of food, drink, and the good life. But, in our model, apartheid takes over the pheromone trails by imposing influx control. We show that while you can leave a pheromone trail behind for your people to follow, it will be impossible for them to follow the trail if it is crisscrossed with barbed wire, roadblocks, toll gates and QR-code wielding police demanding to see your dompas. We use a simple regression analysis to test the strength of influx control in influencing the behaviour of the poor towards scarcity and the good life. Most of the time people can see the trail, we can see where the food is and where the good life is, but the path to get to these things is influx controlled. The pheromone trail model is one way to elegantly define apartheid.
