In global "decarbonisation" efforts, it appears that Africans are the carbon
A racist interpretation of the concept of decarbonisation is unfolding which considers Africans, and other poor people of the world, as the carbon that must be “decarbonised”. In June 2023, Vilhelm Junnila, the Minister for Economic Affairs for Finland, resigned. One of the reasons for the resignation was that he had, in 2019, as an MP, proposed the use of Finnish aid in Africa to promote what he called “climate abortions”. Essentially, in a parliamentary speech, Junnila had recommended that Finland sponsor “climate abortions” for African women in order to save the planet, stating that “It would be justified for Finland to shoulder its responsibility by promoting climate abortions. Climate abortion would be a small step for a person, but a giant leap for humanity”.[1] Decarbonisation describes the process of reducing the amount of carbon, mainly carbon dioxide (CO2), sent into the atmosphere. Its outcome is a “low carbon” future, which experts say is good for the climate. The official parliamentary record shows that Junnila had elaborated that “In the underdeveloped societies of Africa, the number of children can be huge, and the problem escalates even worse as climate change drives them, due to famine, disease and extreme weather, to seek a better life in areas with an even larger carbon footprint.”[2]
