Last Friday I took some pictures of 80 Albert Street, Johannesburg, the old Pass Office where Africans queued to be humiliated to get the Pass Book. This is the same building where, last year, 77 poor people were burnt to death. The people were living in the "hijacked" building. The place is haunting and haunted, a place of death and despair, now covered with soot and the stench of remanent holocausts. Not half the story has been told. One of the #ApartheidStudies projects we are doing is to map the persistence of harm both at such sites and in people's lives.
